Is it normal to grieve for the loss of your pet?
There is a special bond between people and their pets. For most pet parents the connection we have with our pets is often as strong as or stronger than our relationships with other people. Many pet owners say that our pets provide us with a type of companionship and emotional intimacy that other humans can't quite master as yet.Pets know how to love unconditionally, they have no expectations or judgment of us. Humans sometimes struggle to give of themselves freely.This special and close bond we have with our pets can make it seem impossible to cope with the loss when a pet dies.

Pets Fill our need to love and nurture.

Our relationships with our pets affords us the chance to share and express ourselves in a pure form, without the need to defend our actions or feelings. There is no judgement or rejection, there is only love and affection.After we have experienced this type of pure unconditional love, how could we not grieve? The heart does not distinguish between the type of loss we feel, the heart only knows pain.

Surviving the Loss Of your Pet
After the loss of your companion one of the best things you can do is to seek out others who can empathize with your grief and loss. Look for support groups in your area. Join a pet loss forum online. Talk about your feelings, as much as you can, this is very therapeutic. What grieving people want the most is to be heard without judgment. Try not to isolate yourself, keep the doors of communication open with someone you feel comfortable and safe with.

Here are a few things you can do:

1. Change familiar patterns and routines.

2. Do not isolate yourself. Seek out others who understand your loss. Join a support group or consult a therapist who specializes in pet loss.

3. When you feel comfortable enough to do so remove visible reminders that may continue to cause you pain.

4. Memorialize your pet. Many websites offer memorials. Petseverlasting.com offers a free text memorial section.

5. Donate money or your time to a shelter.

6. Have a private Memorial Service

7. Write a letter or poem for your pet

8. Dedicate a gift to a Wildlife organization; most animal organizations would welcome a gift in your pet’s name.

9. Keep the memories alive by putting a scrapbook or photo album together

10. Change the channel in your brain. We have a tendency to replay the final day or events over and over.

If you have a surviving pet or children remember that they are also grieving. Include your children in any choices you make. Talk to your children and allow them to express their feelings and concerns. An inspirational memorial service or tribute is very helpful for children. If you have surviving pets give them more attention and love, pets also grieve.
